Story & Restoration Notes
Earl gets his name from the great Earl Campbell—because once you see his light blue and white Houston Oilers-inspired paint and those stepside fenders (think “tree-trunk legs”), there’s really no other choice. We picked him up at Mecum Dallas in 2024—one of the last trucks rolling through on Friday. The crowd had thinned out. Bidding stalled.
We saw potential.
But once we took a closer look (after winning, of course), we found out why others hesitated: bad brakes, overheating issues, hidden rust, and some seriously sketchy fixes—like a wiper motor mounted to a piece of wood. And don’t even get us started on the Flintstone-style floor pans.
Still, the engine, transmission, and rear end were solid, so we got to work. Rebuilt the cab floor, chased electrical gremlins, fixed the cooling system, and replaced blown mufflers with Flowmasters. The current project: relocating the gas tank from the cab to the rear. Earl’s becoming a solid, clean cruiser—one you can daily without drama and show off without apology.
