Story & Restoration Notes
Lady May rolled into our lives at Mecum Dallas in 2024. It was late in the day, the crowd was thinning out, and there she sat—an iconic ’70s bug just waiting for a second chance. We’d had a few VWs in the family before, so we knew we couldn’t let this one get away.
At the auction, we got her running but didn’t know one tiny detail. There were no brakes. Not even “soft brakes,” none. So naturally, our friend Eddie volunteered (was volunteered) to drive her home using the e-brake and a whole lot of gear shifting. Let’s just say, I called him mid-drive, and he didn’t have enough hands to hold the phone. But she made it home in one piece, and we got the braking situation handled right away.
Since then, we’ve tuned the carb, chased down turn signal issues, and started on new seat covers and carpet. She came with a new convertible top, and now she’s well on her way to being a real looker. She may not be perfect, but that’s part of her magic.
